Meet the Animals

Meet the American alligator

American alligators have an extensive range across the Southeastern United States from Texas and Florida and as far north as North Carolina.

Most commonly, we find alligators in freshwater habitats including lakes, rivers and swamps. Alligators belong to the order Crocodylia, which includes crocodiles, caimans and gharials. This impressive species can grow to lengths of 9-15 feet and weigh up to 1,000 pounds! Although alligators may be intimidating creatures, they serve a very important role in the ecosystems in which they live. Alligators are apex predators, which means they have no natural predators and are at the top of their food chain, providing balance within their ecosystems.
