A colorful science lesson courtesy of hydrangeas
Hydrangeas aren’t just beautiful; they also offer some very cool science lessons!
🌺 The bloom of a hydrangea isn’t a flower. It’s actually made up mostly of a bunch of modified leaves.
🌺 Bloom colors include blue, pink, purple, white and green. Unlike flowers, which get their color variations from different pigments, the acidity of the soil often determines the color of a hydrangea bloom. This means you can change the color of your hydrangea with soil additives – add lemon juice to get blue blooms, for example.
🌺 Chemistry experiments with metal ions like aluminum can result in the creation of designer colors for hydrangea blooms. What color combo would YOU create for a garden?
