Workshop: Robotics

Unleash the power of technology by learning how to build and program robots to follow your every command. Learn different ways we put robots to work and test your skills as you program your robot to perform a series of challenges.

Major Concepts to Be Explored:

  • What is a robot?

  • What can be done with a robot?

  • How can a robot be programmed to move?

  • What are some ways to troubleshoot if a program isn’t working?

 21st Century Skills:

Participants will be able to:

  • Communicate by sharing thoughts, questions, ideas, and solutions

  • Collaborate by working together to reach a goal – putting talent, expertise, and smarts to work

  • Think critically by looking at problems in a new way and linking learning across subjects and disciplines

  • Create, innovate, and invent by trying new approaches when presented with a challenge

 Goals of the Workshop:

  • To introduce students to the science of robotics.

  • To introduce students to programming and programming techniques for robots.

  • To have students use the engineering model of testing, re-evaluating, modifying and trying again.

  • To show the variety of robots in use today.

Workshop Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • Understand what it a robot is

  • Understand how a robot operates via programming

  • Understand how sensors can make a robot do different things

 Methods and Activities:

  • Students will learn how to program a Lego Mindstorm NXT robot.

  • Students will learn how to troubleshoot programming for a Lego Mindstorm NXT robot.

  • Students will learn how to use sensors for a Lego Mindstorm NXT robot.

  • Students will program a robot to complete various challenges.

Key Vocabulary:

Robotics, Robots, Programming, Troubleshooting, Sensor

Set-up Requirements:

  • Teaching/presentation space must be accessible via wheeled cart.
