Workshop: Body Systems

Take a journey through the amazing world of the human body to unravel the workings of human life. Discover how the systems of the body work together, share resources, react to new conditions and heal themselves. Dissections
will bring the wonder up-close and personal to truly illuminate the elegance of life.

Goals of the Workshop:

To introduce students to the different body systems, the components that make up the systems, and how the systems work together. 

Workshop Objectives: 

Students will be able to: 

  • Understand the different systems of the body 

  • Understand the major organs and functions of body systems 

  • Understand how to keep the organs healthy, and what happens if they are not kept healthy 

  • Understand how the body systems work interdependently to help bodies function as they do 

Methods and Activities: 

  • Students will learn about the different body systems. 
  • Students will participate in hands-on activities to facilitate a deeper understanding of the different systems. 
  • Students will dissect a sheep heart, chicken leg, and cow eye to further their understanding. 

Key Vocabulary: 

Cells, Tissue, Organ, Organ System, Human Body, Circulatory System, Respiratory System, Skeletal System, Muscular System, Nervous System 

Set-up Requirements: 

  • Teaching/presentation space must be accessible via wheeled cart. 

  • Large room with tables for students to work in small groups (approx. 2-4 students/group). 

  • Approximate set-up time is 30 min. 

  • Approximate clean-up time is 30 min.   

  • Secure storage location for materials if left overnight. 

  • 15 min needed between sessions to clean-up and restock stations
