Support Discovery Place with science-inspired t-shirt

Discovery Place

In honor of #GivingTuesdayCLT, Charlotte designer Maria Frey is planning to donate proceeds from the sale of her Experiment & Discover t-shirt to Discovery Place.

This original design is available on cottonbureau.com for $29. The t-shirt comes in three colors, with sizes for men and women. The last day to order a shirt is Tuesday, November 29, also the last day to give to the GivingTuesdayCLT campaign. Click here to purchase your t-shirt today.

We were excited to talk with Maria and learn what inspired her creative fund-raising idea:

DP: Tell us a little about yourself.
MF: I’m a designer by trade, a hobby potter, nature lover, wife and mom. Sometimes I get extra creative and do small side projects, like design t-shirts. If we’re digging deeper, I’ve never gotten over wanting to be an astronaut.

DP: How did you come up with the experiment & discover design?
MF: My friend’s dad quotes "Experiment & Discover" as kind of his life motto. It has always resonated with me and I wanted to create something physical that represented what it could mean. As a designer, visual aesthetics are important to me, thus discovery by sight. One night I was sketching out some ideas, and I started down the path of interpreting the shape of an eye and how I could incorporate a somewhat literal symbol of experimentation.

DP: Out of all the GivingTuesdayCLT participants, why did you choose Discovery Place?
MF: When I saw Discovery Place’s profile on the #GivingTuesdayCLT website, it just clicked for me. I thought about the types of things my family and I get excited about and how we spend our time, and it seemed to align so well with Discovery Place's mission. I’m an artist married to an engineer and we’ve got two kids who love to tinker, explore and create. How could I NOT choose Discovery Place?

DP: Do you have any memories at the Museum that you’d like to share?
MF: I have two young boys, and on their list of fun things to do is to spend the day at Discovery Place Kids. I remember the first time we went, they were SO excited and couldn't show me things fast enough. Days later they were still talking and asking about something they interacted with or learned. Somehow they adopted this idea of sharing their wonder and I think it has a lot to do with the environment that Discovery Place has nurtured. That gets a mom really excited too!

Proceeds from t-shirt sale support Discovery Place for #GivingTuesdayCLT
