Student Activities
Prepare for A Day in Pompeii with these activities designed to enhance the exhibition experience.
You can see these programs demonstrated by Museum staff during your visit to A Day in Pompeii. These
demonstrations also are available for download and can be completed at home. Each activity meets standards
for the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and is a teaching tool for topics in history, music,
environmental science and physics.

Activity Overview:
This activity is a look into the inside of the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius and the ash that fell onto the cities
of Pompeii and Herculaneum. By analyzing the ash deposits left behind, important knowledge and detailed insight
can be gained about the final days of the two cities.

Activity Overview:
Participants will step inside the musical world of ancient Rome. Instruments will be provided for participants to become Roman musicians!

Activity Overview:
This activity will help participants to better understand the way geology and art were intertwined in Roman culture.
It will also provide a chance for the participants to see the effects of acid rain on exposed art, and it will give
participants and opportunity to witness the amazing properties of pumice that allow it to float on water.

Activity Overview:
This demonstration will allow the participants to examine technology of warfare of ancient Rome.
The onager relates both to the central theme of the military in Roman culture, and also to the Roman’s
ingenuity. Participants will also have a chance to fire an onager and learn about its uses.

Activity Overview:
Participants conduct a chemical reaction to watch how pennies are coated with zinc to make an alloy or “gold”.
