Kapla Blocks

Enter a creative world of building and fun.

Kapla is a unique wooden building toy made of pine from renewable French forests. They are small rectangle blocks measuring 1x4.5x.75”. Kapla allows kids to build outside the box, enhancing vision and skill - engaging hands-on experience, concentration and understanding. Young builders, engineers, artists and architects are introduced to the world of art and design, science and expression, mathematics and history - the joy of creating and learning together.

The possibilities are endless: monuments, palaces, villages, bridges and futuristic towers. Imagine and build unicorns and crocodiles and multi-colored exotic birds. Playing with Kapla can be as simple as stacking or as complex as building the great architectural pieces of the world. Discovery Place’s Kapla exhibit will feature some inspiring pre-built pieces including an 8’-0” tall replica of the Eiffel Tower as well as a replica of London Bridge.

The best part is there is no need for glue, nails, screws or caps and Kapla blocks are not interlocking. Each Kapla plank is simply placed one on top of the other and held in place by gravity and balance alone. The rectangular design is based on a simple ratio 1:3:5: to 1 pattern resulting in constructions of amazing complexity. Of course what goes up must come down and part of the delight is removing one block at a time until the whole structure is demolished. Crashing to the floor. Again and again. When visitors build with Kapla blocks they are experimenting with the foundations of mathematics, art and science.
