DINOSAURS: Ancient Fossils, New Discoveries Education Resources
Audience:
All ages Activity Overview: In this activity participants will learn what can be inferred about organisms on the basis of trace fossils left by dinosaur footprints. Experimentation with different types of soil media will reveal the special conditions necessary to preserve footprints. Examining and measuring the footprints of dinosaurs and their own footprints will allow participants to understand how scientists are able to infer size and speed of extinct animals.
Audience:
All ages Activity Overview: This demonstration can be done outside or inside providing there is a straight 150’ area. A rope with marked measurements provides information about 24 popular species of dinosaurs. Participants will be able run along with the presenter as (he/she) gives information about each dinosaur.
Audience:
All ages Activity Overview: Participants will use their paleontology skills to unearth surprises that have been embedded in rock! They will use picks, brushes and patience to find a take home dinosaur inside.
Audience:
All ages Activity Overview: Participants have the opportunity to explore different types of fossils and make their own impression fossil.
Audience:
All ages Activity Overview: Participants will be able to use tools of the trade in this interactive fossil finding activity.
Audience:
All ages Activity Overview: Participants investigate what a coprolite is, what trace fossils are, how coprolites can become trace fossils and what these fossils can tell us about the animal that made it. Participants will encounter both real and replica coprolites.
Audience:
All ages Activity Overview: Participants will have the opportunity to create a new dinosaur species out of a Build- A-Saurus play set. They will learn about the various physiological structures of dinosaurs.
Audience:
All ages Activity Overview: A pair of robotic dinosaurs will race one another in an obstacle course that can be laid out and enhanced with add-on obstacles such as rocks or slopes. Participants will control the robotic dinosaurs and race them against their friends and family.
Audience:
All ages Activity Overview: Participants will be creating a geologic time line, which will include labeling each of the 4 eras, the time of each era and major geologic events of each era. They will need to use the geologic time scale as depicted in multiple resources for this activity.
