The Corey Ellis Hughes Dunn Award recognizes teen Apprentices who have exhibited a passion for science and nature, a willingness to learn and a commitment to sharing their knowledge and experiences with others.

This year we recognized our first recipient, Carson Trapp.

Carson has volunteered over 470 hours at the Charlotte Nature Museum in the last 16 months. Her enthusiasm shows in the way she takes initiative to learn tasks and her eagerness to share her knowledge of the natural world with all Charlotte Nature Museum visitors. On any given day, Carson can be found feeding the animals, facilitating animal encounters with our visitors, guiding our summer campers on nature hikes, or leading one of our monthly Creature Feature events.

Carson’s passion and enthusiasm truly embody the spirit of The Corey Ellis Hughes Dunn Award. Every day, she enriches the visitor experience at the Charlotte Nature Museum and is truly an asset to our Apprentice team.

The namesake of the award, Corey Ellis Hughes Dunn, embraced every day given to him and was destined to do great things in the world of science and the environment. He volunteered over 1,500 hours at Discovery Place as one of our Sci-Teens. There he was able to expand his love of science through developing and presenting demonstrations to our visitors, as well as working closely with our summer camp program.

Corey traveled the world exploring the environment. From climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to sailing the ocean with his family, he truly had an insatiable appetite for learning and experiencing new things. In December of 2009, Corey tragically died in a snorkeling accident in Hawaii. Corey was known as curious, bold, bright, adventuresome, fun, and daring. He was loved as a son, a brother, a grandson, a nephew, a cousin and a friend. The Corey Ellis Hughes Dunn Award was created to honor his extraordinary legacy.

The Corey Ellis Hughes Dunn Fund was also created to allow Corey’s friends and family to memorize him and his devotion to learning and discovering science, in hopes that more young people like Corey and Carson will be able to grow their knowledge of science and nature at Discovery Place.
