Vygotsky unveiled

Lev Vygotsky contends that human beings are simultaneously the product of biology and their human cultures. His principal premise is that human beings are products not only of biology, but also of their human cultures. Part of the explanation for how we function intellectually can be explained by our social history. The sharing of this social history with adults and other children is how students learn higher intellectual functions.

Vygotsky espouses the idea of inner speech. Children learn when they have dialog with “more capable peers. Vygotsky demonstrates that children actually use speech to solve problems. If a task is particularly difficult the children tend to use more external egocentric speech. For example they speak to themselves by saying... Keep reading.

Then Discovery Place is where you want to be on Saturdays in January!

What are clouds made of… a lot of water droplets. The atmosphere where clouds form is very cold; when we create clouds in the Explore More Life lab we use liquid nitrogen which is -320 degrees. The liquid nitrogen condenses the cool air in the bottle, forming tiny water droplets. The sky is the limit at Discovery Place – join us for a live Show today!

Beautifully-wrapped cat mummy now on exhibit in Mummies of the World.

Like human mummies, animals can be mummified both by the natural environment and by humans. There are lots of cases of cats as examples of both natural and artificial (human-made) mummification. It is not unusual for cats to crawl into wall spaces, attics or floorboards of old buildings to die. Somtimes the environment is warm or cool, and dry, with good airflow, and the cat will be preserved. Cats were also deliberately mummified by the ancient Egyptians, as offerings to the goddess "Bastet“.

The mummified cats and kittens were wrapped in elaborately bandaged parcels, with heads and ears shaped to resemble a cat, and eyes and noses painted onto the bandages. Some of the animal mummies from ancient Egypt were fakes: individual bones, sticks and other material were wrapped up to... Keep reading.

What happens when a plant or animal dies? The fascinating world of decomposers is one that many people don't know about, but plays an important role in the nutrient cycle. Without decomposers, nutrients would not cycle back into our environment and waste would accumulate quickly. If decomposers did not exist, the earth could be covered in a layer of dead flies almost twenty feet deep in less than a month!

It is the job of decomposers to return the nutrients from the once-living organism back into the environment to be used again. There are 3 major groups of decomposers – the FBI – Fungus, Bacteria, and Invertebrates. Fungi, like mushrooms and molds, are some of the largest organisms on earth – one colony in Oregon spans 2,200 acres and is approximately 2,400... Keep reading.
