Snake and the City
October 29, 2009
Henrietta, the Museum’s 12-foot long, 85-pound Burmese python (Python molurus bivittatus), has found a new home. Many visitors remember her as the quiet yet impressive presence in the Rainforest, currently being upgraded during the renovation. Henrietta has permanently relocated to the Bronx Zoo in New York.
Native to Southeast Asia, Burmese Pythons can grow up to 30 feet in length and weigh up to 300 pounds! As a new member of the Bronx Zoo, Henrietta will help the staff educate their visitors about the dangers that invasive species can present to native populations of animals.
At Discovery Place for more than 10 years, Museum staff is happy that Henrietta has found a new home. The upgraded Rainforest is scheduled to open in June 2010.

What did you do with all the fish that lived in the aquarium?
September 11, 2009
Discovery Place’s aquarium is currently undergoing a major renovation as part of the Museum’s overall redesign. A diverse, new aquarium filled with tanks up to twice as large as the old aquarium will open in June 2010.
So, what happened to all the fish that used to live at Discovery Place?
Many of them were donated to other science centers and aquariums around the country. Some found homes in Hickory, some in Myrtle Beach and some went as far away as Houston and Boston. Our electric eel has found a temporary home at the Catawba Science Center but will be re-adopted when the aquarium reopens.
Some of the freshwater fish were reunited with old family as they were donated back to the local aquarium who first donated the fish to Discovery Place.
There are tropical... Keep reading.
Renovation Update -- Changes to the exhibition halls
July 10, 2009
Today we introduced a new temporary exhibition hall layout to the Museum. Level 1 (including the aquarium and rainforest) remain closed to the public. Half of the Level 2 Halls closed as well. At the same time, we opened the Level 3 halls and filled them with favorite exhibitions and activities formerly located on Level 2. So, now you will find activities such as: Kapla blocks, Simple Machines and the Math & Perception exhibits located in this newly opened hall.
Also, today is the first day of Special Renovation Pricing. Just $7 per person for entrance to the Museum... a savings of up to $3 per person!
Check back here regularly for more information and updates about the renovation.
