Beat the Cold Weather Blues with Discovery Place Winter Break Camps

New day-long camps will be offered December 19 and 20

December 05, 2011

CHARLOTTE – School break is cooler than ever this holiday season with the chance to trade the cold weather for hot science at Discovery Place’s Winter Break Camps. Registration is now open for these all-new, one-day sessions designed to beat the boredom of the holiday break. Combining structured, content-based activities with hands-on fun, the sessions allow Campers in grades K-8 to explore a wide variety of amazing, explosive, mysterious and slimy science topics. Discovery Place Winter Break Camps include:

Pirate Camp (Grades K-1) – Arggh matey! Be a pirate for the day. Learn about the science of being a successful pirate, understand why pirates donned eye patches and build your own ship to practice sailing.

Young Einsteins (Grades K-1) – Get messy in this interactive Camp and conduct explosive experiments, create slimy concoctions, and mix light and paint to create your own new, unique color.

Extreme Physics (Grades 2-5) – Investigate amazing phenomena through physics by experimenting with extreme cold and intense heat. Explode hydrogen balloons laced with magnesium and sample incredible foods frozen in liquid nitrogen.

Mummy Mysteries (Grades 2-5) – Uncover the mysteries of mummies in Mummies of the World. Learn about Egyptian hieroglyphs, the science of mummification and conduct experiments using the mummification process.

Egyptology (Grades 6-8) – Explore Mummies of the World and gain an understanding of the process of mummification. How were the specimens mummified? When alive, how did they live and what did they experience? Unearth answers to these questions and more through hands-on activities.

Surgeon-in-Training (Grades 6-8) – Explore the life of a doctor while learning about the structure and function of cells, tissue, organs and body systems. Perform amazing dissections and learn the basics of suturing a wound.

Winter Break Camps at Discovery Place will be held on December 19 and 20 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a supervised lunch between noon and 1:00 p.m. Campers should bring a bag lunch or money to purchase lunch in Discovery Place’s Community Café, and may also bring nut-free snacks. Camp sessions, cost and other information can be found online. Please call 704.372.6261 x300 for additional questions or to register.
