Discovery Place Summer Operating Hours

May 20, 2011

Discovery Place will extend hours during the summer season. From Monday, May 30—Monday, September 5, 2011 Discovery Place will be open:

• Monday – Friday: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
• Saturday: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
• Sunday: noon – 5 p.m.

Discovery Place’s newest exhibition LIFE: A Journey Through Time runs May 25–September 5 and is free with Museum admission. An interpretation of life on Earth from its earliest beginnings to its present diversity, the exhibition is an original multimedia presentation that blends art, science, and the imagery of acclaimed National Geographic wildlife photographer Frans Lanting.

Splash into a special Marine Mammal Day, Saturday, June 8 and explore what makes these warm-blooded ocean-dwellers so unique, including feeding behaviors, echolocation, identification, adaptations and more. Catch a chat from North Carolina Zoo and South Carolina Aquarium experts about right whales, beluga whales and even polar bears, or step inside the traveling inflatable GeoDome™ to experience a film about how Earth’s climate is changing and impacting all of us.

Find shelter from the heat with one of The Charlotte Observer IMAX Dome Theatre’s giant films. Born To Be Wild transports viewers to the lush rainforests of Borneo and the savannahs of Kenya as a team of researchers fights to save orphaned elephants and orangutans and Tornado Alley takes moviegoers into the heart of a tornado with “Storm Chasers” star Sean Casey behind the wheel of the famous Tornado Intercept Vehicle. The newest IMAX film Rescue reaches out to the hero in everyone and depicts the power of the human spirit during times of natural disaster. Note: There is an additional admission charge for IMAX. The IMAX Dome Theatre will be closed for upgrades from June 1—10 to bring you a better, clearer and more immersive movie-going experience.

Discovery Place is located in uptown Charlotte at 301 N. Tryon Street. Convenient parking is available in the Museum’s parking deck – the Carol Grotnes Belk Complex – at the corner of Sixth and Church Streets.
